Narrows Superintendent Search to One Finalist
After an extensive search, the Governing Board of the Byron Union School District is delighted to announce that Dr. Debbie Burnette has been selected as the lead candidate for the position of Superintendent. Following a site visit, it is anticipated that appointment of Dr. Burnette as the district’s next Superintendent will occur on Thursday, June 27, at the regular meeting of the Board of Education.
The Governing Board made its decision with input gathered from all key stakeholder groups in the District regarding the qualities desired of the next Superintendent.
“Dr. Burnette was selected as our finalist from an outstanding field of candidates. Her experience and credentials are exactly what we need in Byron as we move our district forward in partnership with our community to expand opportunities for our students. Dr. Burnette’s extensive experience in instructional leadership and strong partnerships with employees will be a tremendous asset in providing leadership as the district continues its focus on expanding opportunities for our students” said Board President Jeffry Sugimoto.
Dr. Burnette currently serves as the Assistant Superintendent and Director of Special Education of the Millbrae School District. Dr. Burnette began her career as an elementary, middle and high school teacher prior to her appointment as a Vice-Principal in Antioch Unified. She moved to Lammersville in 2004 and served as the Principal of a K-8 School and the District’s Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment. She was promoted to the position of Asst. Superintendent of Lammersville in 2008, with responsibilities for the entire instructional program prior to moving to her current position in the Millbrae School District. In each of her professional roles, she has received accolades for her instructional leadership and her professional development training skills.
Dr. Burnette completed her doctoral studies in Organizational Leadership at the University of LaVerne and her MA and BA in Educational Administration at San Francisco State University. Dr. Burnette is a member of the Association of California School Administrators and she has completed the Academy program in the Superintendency, Curriculum and Instruction, with exceptional expertise in English language learner instruction, education law, special education and common core standards implementation.
Dr. Burnette is a resident of Knightsten and a parent of two adult children
