Discovery Bay’s new Swim Team…. Discovery Bay will welcome a new youth athletic program in 2014. The Discovery Bay River Otters swim team.
The local swim team has been a long-time vision of Discovery Bay residents, Rick and Melissa Pierce, who first brought their idea to the Town of Discovery Bay in early 2013. “We really wanted to be a part of bringing a quality swim program to Discovery Bay,” said Melissa Pierce. “We’re a swimming family and we’d love to see Discovery Bay offer a program that emphasizes proper swim techniques and fun.”
The River Otters swim program is part of the new Discovery Bay Community Center Recreation programming that was introduced this month (see story inside this issue). The Otters will be managed by a coach/parent committee, but fees and scheduling will be administered by the Town of Discovery Bay.
Organizer, Rick Pierce, says the public feedback so far has been positive: “People are really excited about the River Otters,” said Pierce. “With registration starting February 8, 2014, some people have expressed their intent to arrive early that morning to secure one of the 80 available spots.”
The River Otters welcomes swimmers ages 5 through 18. Swimmers must be able to swim unassisted the length of a 25 yard pool to qualify for the try-outs on April 5. Registration fees will be $350 and will include paid, experienced coaches, team swim cap, team t-shirt, car decals, little incentives throughout the season, and an end of season awards barbecue and campout at the community center.
Space is limited, and so the swim team is offering priority registration for sponsors who can help with the team’s start-up costs. For more information, email: firstname.lastname@example.org, or visit the Town of Discovery Bay website’s Community Center link: http://www.todb.ca.gov
