2014 is shaping up to be the driest year on record.  With that in mind, Discovery Bay residents – who never miss an opportunity for fun and attention – are hoping to turn that forecast around.  In the last week of January, the Guinness Book of World Records approved Discovery Bay’s bid to attempt the world record for “Most People Performing a Raindance.”  This fun and outrageous community event will happen February 8.  Rain or shine.

The Raindance World Record attempt has several objectives:   To have a fun community event and break a world record, to raise awareness of the drought and the need for water conservation, to promote the new Community Center and the new recreational programming being offered there,  and to bring national attention to Discovery Bay and the important water issues taking place around the Delta.

The current record is 395 and was achieved by PEI (Ireland) at Carton House, Maynooth, Co. Kildare, Ireland, on May 29, 2011.

The attempt will also feature fun music, food, vendors, and of course – dancing.  Prizes will be awarded for best group and individual costumes, and for best group and individual dance. Representatives from the local Miwok indian tribe have been asked to participate and help lead the dance.

Both regional and national news media attention will be focused upon the Discovery Bay record attempt and local water rights. Organizers ask that you bring your friends and family for a fun day outside of the Discovery Bay Community Center to help break a world record.

The Discovery Bay record attempt will take place Saturday, February 8, at the Discovery Bay Community Center, 1601 Discovery Bay Boulevard.  Registration will begin at 1:00 p.m. – Rain or shine.
