False Bomb Incident
On Thursday, at about 6:27 PM, Deputy Sheriffs were dispatched to a gas station on the 14000 block of Highway 4 in Discovery Bay regarding a possible pipe bomb.
The caller reported that a box was thrown into his truck by a person who he knows. He removed the box, which contained what appeared to be a pipe bomb.
Deputies set up a perimeter. The Walnut Creek Police Bomb Squad responded and rendered the device safe. It turned out to be fake.
Deputies were able to locate and arrest the suspect. 19-year-old Peter Balas of Pleasanton is currently at the Martinez Detention Facility on a false bomb charge. He is being held in lieu of $20,000 bail.
