The Liberty High Swim & Dive team is making waves this season, as varsity swimmers break decades-old records, and are just a ripple away from drowning other long-held times.

On March 11, the team announced that two school records (both established three decades ago), had been broken; The Men’s 200 Free Relay and Men’s 50 Free – Records now belonging to seniors Russell Jessen, Mason Lyman, Dylan Oquendo and Zachary Perry. One week later, another record-breaking moment was celebrated; the Men’s 100 Back, held these past 18 years by local legend, John Dwelley. That record now also belongs to Liberty senior, Mason Lyman.

BROKEN!  Men’s 200 Free Relay  (27-year-old team record, Est. 1994)

  • Previous Record: 1:32.64 (B. Atwell; Jo. Wendler; Ja. Wendler; R. Shatting)
  • New Record: 1:31.40 (Dylan Oquendo; Zachary Perry; Russell Jessen; Mason Lyman)

BROKEN!  Men’s 50 Free  (30-year-old team record, Est. 1991)

  • Previous Record: 22.25  (Rob Shatting)
  • New Record: 21.90 (Mason Lyman)

BROKEN!  Men’s 100 Back  (18-year-old team record, Est. 2003)

  • Previous record – 55.44 (John Dwelley set at NCS)
  • New record – 54.54  (Mason Lyman)

The Liberty Varsity Swim Team currently boasts an incredible 30-senior-powerhouse. Every meet in this abbreviated season holds excitement as more records may slip and fall to these super-fast individual swimmers and relay teams.

Coach Cindi Coats expressed pride at the team’s momentum: “When we were not able to finish the 2020 season, we knew that the motivation and continuation of the [record breaking] season we had expected would be a battle. The battle was won and “WE ARE BACK ON TRACK!”

Previous record-holder, John Dwelley, reacted to the news: “Wow! Amazing! I am so happy to hear sports are happening again (especially swimming).”

“As our top boys turn it on, I look forward to making more announcements like this!” said Coats. Both women’s and men’s swimming at Liberty are tough acts to beat this year, with a 100+ member team and a deep bench of experienced varsity swimmers.

Three opportunities remain to witness greatness in the 2021 high school swim season:

  • March 24             Liberty v Freedom
  • March 31             Liberty v Pittsburg
  • April 9                 BVAL Swim Championships
